The images in this video start and end with my stay at the Four Seasons in the Maldives on the island of Kuda Hura. The middle section is in Bora Bora and Moorea.
The piece was composed at Yosemite National Park infront of a reflecting pool two tenths of a mile past Vernal Falls on the mist trail. Within the theme, is a sense of the autumn day I spent there, the tranquility of the mirror pool upset only by gusts of wind followed by showers of yellow maple leaves calmly landing on its surface.
My goal with this concerto was to be a balance for the extreme intensity of my 5th concerto. I wanted a more intimate piece that was focused more on the music than being a vehicle for displaying advanced virtuoso technique. The first and last movements are in B minor and the second movement is in D major.
When the Virgin Records label president told me that he had booked the Philharmonia Orchestra at Blackheath Hall for two, three-hour sessions to record my Concerto #5 (Royce Concerto), he said that there would be enough time to record another five minutes of music with the orchestra. I immediately told him that I wanted to record the "Mirror Pool" from my Concerto #6. This is one of the few compositions that I created in a couple of hours. I usually spend years processing variables for major works. But with this piece, it was as if the music composed itself while I sat infront of the mirror pool.
